Worried About Your Car Failing Its Emissions Test?

How a Catalytic Converter Will Help You Pass Your Smog Inspection Test

If you are concerned that your car will fail its next smog inspection test, then you need to read on if you wish to find out why catalytic converters are so important?

The emissions from automobiles contain noxious gases that include carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxide. When these are not treated, they are belched out from cars and have become the largest source of ground-level ozone today. Ground-level ozone is responsible for respiratory issues, smog, and damage to plant life. A catalytic converter uses metallic catalysts, which are either platinum, rhodium or palladium, which create a chemical reaction with these noxious gases, and helps to convert them into less harmful ones.

The catalytic converter was first developed in the 1960s, and by the 1970s, most vehicles came with one. In 1975, the United States’ Clean Air Act stated that 75% emissions reduction on all new model vehicles, needed to be reached, and was achieved by using a catalytic converter. Over the years, this has been constantly improved upon and is now more efficient than before. In the US, these improvements are all in accordance with the Environmental Protection Agency’s, or EPA for short, and now there are even more stringent amendments to the Clean Air Act.

Although a catalytic converter has been highly successful in reducing the dangerous pollutants that are released by automobiles every day, especially to the ground-level ozone, it has come under some criticism. Even though it has helped to resolve one serious environmental issue, the trade-off is at the expense of increased global warming. The converter creates and releases gases that are responsible for global warming. Carbon dioxide, which is released with the noxious gases from a vehicle’s exhaust system, is increased by this system.
